Things We Love: Food!

This is part of an ongoing series highlighting things that the team here at TWA love.

There are so many wonderful businesses here in Bozeman that have delicious food we love to eat.  We thought it would make sense to share some of them with our readers (in the crazy off chance that you don’t already know about these great places).  We could go on and on about different places to get good grub but we will limit ourselves to lunch and snacks, as that’s what’s primarily on our mind on weekdays.

Lunch

If you’re looking for something healthy, Farmacy is a great place to start.  They have an entirely plant-based menu and have an “eat like an ox” (oxen are vegetarians) philosophy.  They have a welcome and opening space that fits well with their mission of feeding real and healthy meals to the community.

Their classic lunch items are bowls with a base of a green and a grain, then four cold toppings and a hot topping (think Garlic Soy Mushrooms or Mexican Street Corn just to name two) with dressing.

If eating oxen is more your thing than eating like oxen, then there’s the Bozeman Taproom or Burger Bob’s for solid burgers and Bar 3 if you like BBQ.  One of the best menu items at Bar 3 is their burnt ends.  With a name like that, some of us less familiar with BBQ were skeptical when one of the team raved about them.  Turns out that burnt ends were normally just odd-shaped parts of the meat that were cut off and used in stews and appetizers until they became really popular as one of the pillars of KC-style BBQ.  If that’s not enough in the way of calories, you can order a side of their poutine.  Poutine was invented in Quebec some years back and Bar 3 tops their fries with cheese curds, pickled pepper country gravy, and fresh herbs.

If you’re not looking for a healthy bowl or a meat coma, here are a few other great options:

If you prefer to get your chow from food trucks, there are a couple great choices in El Rodeo (Mexican: lots of choices but their tacos are amazing) and Mo Bowls (Mac and Cheese in configurations your dreams have dreamed of, if you haven’t).  Mo Bowls also has a restaurant if their food truck is not out and about.

Snacks

You’d think with lunches like that on offer we’d be full, but you’d be wrong!  Whether it’s before lunch or after it, the TWA team needs food as part of fueling our creativity.  Favorite snacks include:

  • Donuts.  Right across the street from MSU is Granny’s Gourmet Donuts.  All these donuts are handmade every day: you can even sprinkle your own donut if you want.  These aren’t the regular hole-in-the-middle donuts.  They are raised yeast donuts made fresh every morning.  Team favorites include chocolate ganache, coffee, apple, orange creme...if they haven’t sold out already.

  • Baked goods.  You can always spot when Wild Crumb is open because there’s a line out the door.  Grab huckleberry scones or cheesecake...if there’s any left.

  • Coffee.  People from out of town might never guess it, but Bozeman is definitely a coffee town.  There are so many great spots to choose from, but to name just a few:

    • Coldsmoke - not your homey coffee shop but a huge place to meet up with friends while grabbing a brew.  They are big fans of single-origin coffees here.

    • Treeline Coffee Roasters - the clue is in the name: they don’t just make good coffee, they roast it and ship it all over the place

    • Mazevo - their first locations opened in Billings but now they are here in Bozeman and have a bright and open spot on Shedhorn Drive.

Some days you just need ice cream to make it through the day and you can get your fix at Genuine.  They are homemade, small-batch runs and they don’t bother to post a menu on their website because the flavors keep rotating all the time.

Okay, that’s enough: we need to take a break from writing about all this food to eat some!
